I
am a native Californian living and working in Soquel, which is
located on the Central Coast of California in the heart of the
beautiful Monterey Bay.
I
am a fabric artist who received an art scholarship upon graduation
from South Pasadena High School, after which I attended UCLA,
where I received an Associate of Arts degree from their Art Department,
with a major in Design in 1958.
To
relax from the pressure of a busy daily schedule, I developed
an interest in quilting. My love of fabric and color had only
grown over the years, as the quality of quilting fabrics increased
exponentially and the hues and values of printed fabric became
so rich and varied. During this time I acquired a huge selection
of fabric which I use in my work.
Since
quilting takes such a long time in order to produce one piece,
I began to experiment with other methods of using the fabric to
create artwork that could be completed more quickly. Pleased with
the effect of the fabric collages, I began to devote more time
to this process, embellishing the scenes with hand stitching.
After
retirement in 2000 (followed by a move to the Monterey Bayarea),
my return to my first love marks the moment when I started creating
art on a full time basis.
The
pieces shown are original works, though I sometimes use adaptations
of well known paintings and photographs as my subject, letting
the fabric in my collection render its own version of reality.
